The search for new materiality

The aim of my research is to analyze the needs of sustainable materials that respond to the search for new materiality. This is my latest and ongoing project that started with a SCOBY - Symbiotic Community of Bacteria and Yeast. It feeds on sugar, polyphenols and other nutrients dissolved in green or black tea. During the fermentation process, bacteria form a floating cellulose film on the surface of the tea. Inspired by the discoveries and experiments of Suzanne Lee and other researchers/creators with kombucha leather, I decided to try to grow my new surface and start exploring its possibilities. New colors, textures and shapes were created by experimenting with natural dyeing and growing techniques.
